OLSON & HEKMATI is one of the best-known and most popular German longboard brands and one of the largest German manufacturers. OLSON & HEKMATI - that's Oliver Dehmel and Björn Hekmati. Oliver Dehmel (*1984) studied sports and economics at the University of Mainz. Björn Hekmati (*1976) studied architecture at the TU Darmstadt, received his doctorate in 2011 and is currently working there as a research assistant in the field of urban development. The two met for the first time in Mainz in 2006 – while skating, of course. Both had recently started building their own boards at home, so it made sense to continue the experiments together in Björn's garage. They wanted to explore the possibilities and limits of board construction. Olli and Björn pressed their decks with the help of stone slabs, large amounts of sand, through screw connections and also with a refrigerator pump. They built boards that were way too thick and way too thin, too long, too short, too soft and too hard, the shapes were sometimes too narrow and sometimes too wide, some were too flat, others had way too much concave or camber. The surfaces were often wavy, sticky or cracked, and the two were rarely satisfied with their products. Their own constructions were always equipped and tested with new components, so Olli and Björn got to know the whole range of products on the longboard market. During this time they learned a lot and gradually developed an attitude towards the functionality, design and production methods of longboards. In 2007 the first orders for custom boards came from friends - so Olli and Björn started to build decks for money from time to time. This was accompanied by more intensive thinking about the efficiency of production and the procurement of new tools and materials, including the first 100m roll of carbon fiber fabric. From then on, Olli and Björn called themselves Olson & Hekmati and developed their logo (an O and an H, composed of segments of the barrel shape), which adorns their boards to this day. The two traveled together to a number of longboard events nationwide and became part of the burgeoning scene in Germany. They got to know pretty much everyone who has rank and name in longboard Germany today, became better and better known and gradually established a network of importers, dealers, producers and of course riders. With Björn's move at the end of 2007, there was also a move to a new garage - Olli and Björn set up their first longboard workshop there. With the business registration of Olson & Hekmati - initially as a sole proprietorship - at the beginning of 2008, the foundation stone was laid for the later Dehmel and Hekmati GbR. In addition to the individual board constructions on customer request, Olli and Björn now also began to standardize some of their shapes, they still build the Pumper p95 from that time today. Most of the boards from that time are still ridden intensively, they were already of a high quality and proved to be extremely durable. In 2009 the demand developed rapidly; In order to be able to build more and more boards in less and less time, the production processes had to be further optimized on the one hand, and on the other Olli and Björn simply needed help now. Longboard enthusiast Johannes Krimm, who moved from Koblenz to Mainz this year and had a custom foam core slalom board built right away, was the first Olson&Hekmati employee to come on board – he has been working for the company ever since, developing new boards and takes care of quality management, among other things. In 2010 the company strategy changed permanently. Olson&Hekmati decided to release a first standard lineup of boards, which could be understood as the lowest common denominator of the custom boards of the past few years. As a result, individual agreements on special requests became rarer, more boards could be realized in a shorter time. In 2011 the company became what it is today. A workshop in Mainz Neustadt was rented and additional employees were hired in the form of Alexander Dehmel, Paul Göck and Rasmus Konken. The workshop not only houses the Olson&Hekmati production; At the same time, it has become a meeting place for the Mainz longboard scene, every Thursday evening there is a barbecue in the courtyard after the Mainz roller lap, and often a number of the sponsored Olson&Hekmati team riders are there and are happy to share their knowledge with the newbies... The upcoming boom of the sport, the new own shop called :: asphaltinstrumente :: - opened on March 10th together with the long-time sympathizer and partner Stefan Weiler - in the vicinity of the workshop, the own column "Bjoerns Welt" in the first German longboard magazine 40inch and a fully wooden basic line of the most successful models from the Olson&Hekmati manufactory are just a few of the prospects for further development in 2012. Special attention was paid to our own reels, which were initially launched in four variations. In 2013, the shop and workshop moved together to new, larger premises on Neubrunnenstrasse in Mainz. The shop has tripled in area and the workshop has doubled. Many processes could be simplified considerably due to the spatial proximity. A dedicated mini ramp completes the "O&H world". New manufacturing techniques expanded the range to include a pro line for racing and freeride enthusiasts, as well as our own slide gloves and special freeride trousers with leather trimmings. With the founding of the "Rollbrettsportverein Rhein Main" the Mainz community took a big step in the direction of promoting young talent, of course with the participation of the Olson&Hekmati team. With their contribution to the subject of self-building in the first German longboard book "Longboard: Die Kunst des Asphaltsurfen", Olson & Hekmati were able to make their experiences in longboard building accessible to a broader public for the first time. In 2014, longboarding became a popular sport. OLSON & HEKMATI contributed to a contribution in the show with the mouse on the subject and the Youtubers around Dner and Unge drove their media-effective longboard tour through Germany - the public perception of the sport took on a whole new dimension. In production, with more and more employees and expanded premises, the course was set for a significantly increased throughput. The OLSON & HEKMATI racing team was able to deliver a successful season in the German Longboard League DLL and also on the international stage with various top 10 placements and one or the other podium. In 2015, OLSON & HEKMATI expands the product range of decks, wheels and ball bearings, especially in the performance sector, and the :: asphaltinstrumente :: skate shop dares to cross the Rhine with a branch in the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden. The family offspring of the founders now tend towards half a dozen and in the "O&H-Welt" with workshop, apartment and shop in Neubrunnenstraße around 20 skaters and longboarders work in a family atmosphere - eating together in the courtyard, skate trips and parties are the order of the day Agenda. Olson&Hekmati stay true to themselves and try to put heart and soul into everything they do. It remains exciting - soon more...
