Santa Cruz & Jim Phillips

Jim Phillips had and still has a special influence on Santa Cruz's iconic board graphics. Even people who have never had anything to do with skateboards should know the Screaming Hand. The blue "Screaming Hand" is an indelible icon of skateboard culture. Created in 1985 by Santa Cruz graphic artist Jim Phillips, the howling appendage emblazoned on t-shirts, skateboards and stickers around the world is honored with a fitting tribute to his influential legacy. Jim Phillips and the images he created are legendary in the skateboarding community. A graduate of Santa Cruz High School, Phillips began publishing his artwork in local surf magazines in the 1960s. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Phillips served as art director for Santa Cruz Skateboards, where he created thousands of well-known images, the most famous of which became the blue Screaming Hand. "I'm often asked where I got the idea for the Screaming Hand," Phillips explains its origin. "As I sat at my drawing table clenching my left hand, I made a sketch and thought about how powerful the hand is and how artists have used it in gestures to express emotion. Then I thought about how it would be even more expressive if it had a mouth right on the palm, and how much more so if it screamed!" Yet tens of years later, the Screaming Hand has proven to be timeless.
