Helge Tscharn: Skateboard Photography in the Interplay of Scene, Music, and Architecture
In the 1980s, Helge Tscharn established himself as one of the most influential skateboard photographers in Europe. Remaining true to the scene he belongs to, he captures personalities such as Claus Grabke, Lance Mountain, Ray Barbee, Tony Hawk, and many more. His passion for hardcore music is also reflected in his work through shoots with bands like Pantera, Monster Magnet, and Motörhead.
Many of his portraits are taken with a fisheye lens, whose distorted, immediate style quickly becomes his trademark. Architecture also plays a central role in Tscharn's photography. His shots never focus solely on the skateboard trick itself but rather on the skateboarder in the urban environment - as an organic component, a lone fighter, and simultaneously an outsider.
This theme shapes many of his works from the 1990s. The images are monumental, often in a grainy black and white or in the crystal-clear "frozen" look that has become his unmistakable style.
