About Independent:
Independent Truck Company is a skateboard axle producer based in Santa Cruz, California, USA. Founded in 1978, the company is now owned by NHS Inc and sponsors a comprehensive list of professional skateboarders. The axles are produced in San Francisco, USA by Emrico Enterprises Inc., which is the only foundry in America dedicated exclusively to the production of skateboard axles.
Independent was founded by Richard Novak, Jay Shiurman, Fausto Vitello, and Eric Swenson. It all started with the Stage 1 axle, which was first presented to the public on May 23, 1978 in Newark, California, USA. According to team rider Rick Blackhart, the Independent axle (or Indy) was founded as a response to the market leaders at that time: Bennett Trucks and Tracker Trucks. According to Blackhart, one of these axles constantly broke and one barely turned. Independent aimed to revolutionize the market, fix the mistakes of others, and has successfully done so.
The iconic logo of the axles, the Alisee Cross (often confused with the iron cross), was designed after a photo in TIME Magazine of Pope John Paul II. He wore the cross on his robe. Since the introduction of Independent, this cross has represented the company.
Independent is now the market leader in the skateboard axle industry and will likely hold this position forever!
