Independent Truck Company is a skateboard truck manufacturer based in Santa Cruz, California, USA. Founded in 1978, the company is now owned by NHS Inc and sponsors a comprehensive list of professional skateboarders. The trucks are produced in San Francisco USA by Emrico Enterprises Inc., which is the only foundry in America dedicated exclusively to producing skateboard trucks.

Independent was founded by Richard Novak, Jay Shiurman, Fausto Vitello, and Eric Swenson. It all started with the Stage 1 truck. It was first presented to the public on May 23, 1978 in Newark, California USA. According to team rider Rick Blackhart, the Independent truck (or Indy) was founded as a response to the market leaders at that time - Bennett Trucks and Tracker Trucks. According to Blackhart, one of these trucks constantly broke while the other barely turned. Independent aimed to revolutionize the market, correct the mistakes of others, and successfully did so.

The iconic logo of the trucks, the Alisee cross (often confused with the iron cross), was designed after a photo in TIME magazine of Pope John Paul II wearing it on his robe. Since its introduction by Independent, this cross symbolizes the company.
