About Powell & Peralta:

Powell & Peralta is an American skateboard company founded by George Powell and Stacy Peralta in 1978. The company gained recognition in the 80s, a time when skateboarding was slowly establishing itself as a sport. Powell & Peralta created the Bones Brigade, a team that brought together all the top riders of that era. In 1991, Peralta left Powell, and George started producing skateboards and accessories under the names Powell, Bones Bearings, and RollerBones. The two founders later reunited to revive the old products under the name Powell Classic.

Background:

George Powell studied engineering at Stanford University and began producing skateboards in 1957. His interest in skateboarding was reignited when his son asked for a skateboard in 1974. This led him to experiment with urethane wheels for improved performance. He started producing his own boards and wheels using urethane and incorporating materials like aluminum and fiberglass to create composite boards.

  • One of the test riders for his flexible slalom boards was Stacy Peralta.
  • After losing his job in the aerospace industry, George moved from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara to pursue his passion for skateboarding.
  • In 1976, he built the Quiksilver ProSlalom Deck, marketed by Sims, followed by the innovative Quicktail Board.
  • Powell developed wheels called "Bones," named so because someone remarked that they had the color of human bones.

Establishment of Powell Peralta:

In 1978, George and Stacy decided to establish Powell Peralta together. Peralta was already a prominent name in the skateboard industry and focused on building the team and marketing efforts. They founded the Bones Brigade in 1979, bringing together top riders of that time. With unique skeleton designs by Vernon Courtland Johnson, Powell Peralta stood out from competitors and became one of the leading brands of the 1980s.

  • They produced iconic boards like Tony Hawk's Iron Cross board, Mc Gill Skull and Snake board, Caballero Dragon board, Lance Mountain Future Primitive board, Ray Underhill Cross board, and Ollie Tank board while advancing production of Bones Wheels.

Videos:

Powell Peralta started producing Bones Brigade videos which are considered some of the most influential skateboard videos of their time and are now classics:

  • Skateboarding In The Eighties (1982)
  • The Bones Brigade Video Show (1984)
  • Future Primitive (1985)
  • The Search for Animal Chin (1987)
  • Public Domain (1988)
  • Axe Rated (1988)
  • Ban This (1989)
  • Propaganda (1990)
  • Eight (1991)
  • Celebrity Tropical Fish (1991)
